NSU Grading Policy and CGPA Scale
📖 Direct Answer: North South University grades every course on a 4.00-point scale published in its official Grading Policy. A = 4.00, A− = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, down to F = 0.00, and each grade is weighted by the course's credit hours. Your CGPA is your total grade points divided by your total credits counted, exactly what this calculator computes.
This tool uses that same official scale, so whether you study in the School of Business and Economics, School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, School of Health and Life Sciences, or School of Humanities and Social Sciences, entering your letter grades and credit hours here will match the CGPA shown on your RDS transcript.
NSU Numerical Score to Grade Point Table
| Numerical Score | Letter Grade | Grade Point | Remark |
|---|---|---|---|
| 93 and above | A | 4.00 | Excellent |
| 90 – 92 | A− | 3.70 | Excellent |
| 87 – 89 | B+ | 3.30 | Good |
| 83 – 86 | B | 3.00 | Good |
| 80 – 82 | B− | 2.70 | Good |
| 77 – 79 | C+ | 2.30 | Average |
| 73 – 76 | C | 2.00 | Average |
| 70 – 72 | C− | 1.70 | Average |
| 67 – 69 | D+ | 1.30 | Poor |
| 60 – 66 | D | 1.00 | Poor |
| Below 60 | F | 0.00 | Failure |
Individual faculty members set the exact cut-off for each assessment, so always confirm your final grade against your official RDS transcript. This table reflects the university-wide grade point mapping published in the official grading policy above.
How NSU Calculates Your CGPA
NSU's Office of the Controller of Examinations defines CGPA as your Total Grade Points divided by Total Credits Counted. Grade points for a course are its grade point value (from the table above) multiplied by its credit hours. This is exactly what this calculator does when you enter your courses.
Expanded, where each course contributes its grade point multiplied by its credit hours:
Worked Example: One NSU Semester
Say you completed three courses in a semester, a typical mix of a lab-based science course, a math course, and a general education course:
| Course Type | Grade | Credit Hours | Grade Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Introductory Programming Course | A | 3 | 4.00 × 3 = 12.00 |
| Physics Course with Lab | B+ | 4 | 3.30 × 4 = 13.20 |
| English Composition | A− | 3 | 3.70 × 3 = 11.10 |
| Total | 10 | 36.30 | |
That semester's SGPA is 3.63. Once you add a second semester in the calculator above, the tool combines both semesters' grade points and credit hours into one running CGPA, the same way NSU's transcript accumulates your result term after term.
Credits That Do Not Count Toward CGPA
Not every credit on your transcript affects your CGPA. Per NSU's published policy:
- Waived courses display no grade and are not counted.
- Transfer credits from another university count toward your degree's credit total but are excluded from your CGPA calculation.
- Retaken courses count only once: only the better of the two grades is used in the CGPA, though both attempts remain on the transcript.
When using the calculator above, enter only the credits and grades that appear on your official transcript for CGPA purposes, and leave out waived or transferred courses.
Academic Standing and Probation at NSU
NSU defines good academic standing as a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher. If your CGPA falls below 2.00, the university places you on academic probation.
Because probation is measured every semester, the fastest way to check where you stand is to add your latest semester in the calculator above and watch the overall CGPA update instantly, then use the Target CGPA panel to see exactly what GPA you need next semester to climb back above 2.00.
GPA to Class Equivalence
NSU also maps your GPA to a class standing, a comparison many students need for job applications and scholarship forms that ask for "class" rather than CGPA:
| GPA Range | Class |
|---|---|
| 3.00 and above | First Class |
| 2.50 – 2.99 | Second Class |
| 2.00 – 2.49 | Third Class |
NSU Retake Policy and How It Changes Your CGPA
According to NSU's official grading policy, you may retake any course in which you earned a grade of B or lower. F grades must be retaken, since an F keeps counting against your CGPA until you replace it with a passing grade in the same or an equivalent course.
- When you retake a course, the new attempt is recorded on your transcript alongside the original.
- Only the better of the two grades is used to calculate your CGPA.
- The original, lower grade still appears on your transcript for record-keeping, but it no longer affects your CGPA once you have a better retake grade.
- Retaking a course means registering and paying tuition and fees for it again, the same as any other course.
In this calculator, model a retake by entering only the grade you want counted for that course. If you originally got a C in a 3-credit course and retook it for a B+, enter one course row with B+ and 3 credits, since the C no longer factors into your CGPA.
Graduation CGPA Requirements at NSU
To qualify for an undergraduate degree at NSU, university policy requires:
- A minimum of 120 credits completed, with at least 60 of those credits earned at NSU as a degree-admitted student.
- Completion of all course requirements for the degree, including general education, core, and concentration/major or minor courses.
- An overall CGPA of at least 2.00 to qualify for the degree.
- A CGPA of at least 2.50 within your Concentration/Major and Minor category, if you are graduating with a declared concentration, major, or minor.
Graduate degrees have their own thresholds set by each school and department; check with your program office for the exact CGPA required for your MSc, MBA, or other graduate degree, since these vary by discipline.
Latin Honors and Gold Medals at NSU
NSU recognizes graduating undergraduates with three levels of Latin honors printed on the transcript: Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude, awarded based on final CGPA. The exact CGPA cut-off for each level is set by the Office of the Controller of Examinations and reviewed periodically, so confirm the current thresholds directly with that office before assuming you qualify.
Separately, NSU awards a Chancellor's Gold Medal to the single highest-CGPA graduate and Vice Chancellor's Gold Medals to the second-highest CGPA graduate from each school, alongside a Valedictorian recognition. These awards are decided on your final CGPA at the point of convocation, along with a clean disciplinary record and steady progression through your program without semester gaps.
If your goal is a Latin honor or a gold medal, track your CGPA every semester with the calculator above so you always know exactly how much room, or how little, you have left before your final transcript is finalized.
GPA vs CGPA at NSU: What Is the Difference?
At NSU, GPA (sometimes shown as SGPA on other calculators) refers to your grade point average for a single semester or trimester. CGPA is your cumulative result across every semester you have completed so far. NSU's own transcript and academic policy documents mostly use the single term "GPA" to refer to your cumulative standing, which is why you will see phrases like "a GPA of less than 2.00" used for probation even though it means your overall, cumulative figure.
The calculator above keeps both numbers visible at the same time: each semester box shows that semester's own SGPA, while the sidebar shows your running overall CGPA across every semester you have entered.
Common Mistakes When Calculating Your NSU CGPA
Counting Both Attempts of a Retaken Course
If you retook a course, only the better grade counts toward your CGPA. Entering both the original low grade and the retake grade will understate your real CGPA. Enter the retaken course only once, using the better grade.
Including Waived or Transferred Credits
Waived courses and credits transferred from another university count toward your total credits for graduation but are excluded from your CGPA. Leave these out of the calculator entirely, or your result will not match your official RDS transcript.
Ignoring Credit Hours
NSU's CGPA is credit-weighted, not a simple average of your grade points. A 4-credit course with a B+ affects your CGPA more than a 1-credit lab with an A. Always enter the correct credit hours for each course.
Converting Percentages Instead of Using the Letter Grade
Course instructors set their own numerical cut-offs within university guidelines, so a raw percentage does not always map to the grade table above exactly. Use the letter grade that actually appears on your transcript rather than converting a percentage yourself.
Mixing Up NSU's Scale With the Public University (UGC) Scale
NSU's 4.00-point, credit-weighted system is different from the flat grading scale used by many public universities and National University (NU) affiliated colleges in Bangladesh. If you studied under that system instead, use our CGPA Calculator, which follows the common public-university grading scale, so your result matches your actual transcript.
Do BRAC, IUB, EWU, AIUB and UIU Use the Same Scale?
Partly. BRAC University and Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) publish a North American-style 4.00 grading scale like NSU's, with A = 4.00 and 0.30-point plus/minus steps, so students there can use this calculator. East West University (EWU) publishes the UGC-style table instead (A+ = 4.00 at 80% and above, A = 3.75), so EWU students should use the CGPA Calculator. American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) and United International University (UIU) publish their own tables, with grade points that differ from NSU's, so this calculator may not match their transcripts.
Because individual grading policies still differ slightly, particularly around retake rules and probation thresholds, always cross-check your final CGPA against your own university's official grading policy or student portal, rather than assuming every rule on this page carries over exactly.

Frequently Asked Questions About NSU CGPA
NSU grades every course on a 4.00-point scale: A = 4.00, A− = 3.70, B+ = 3.30, B = 3.00, B− = 2.70, C+ = 2.30, C = 2.00, C− = 1.70, D+ = 1.30, D = 1.00, and F = 0.00, as published in the official NSU Grading Policy. This calculator uses that exact scale.
NSU calculates CGPA by dividing your total grade points (each course's grade point multiplied by its credit hours, summed across all courses counted) by your total credits counted. This calculator performs the same calculation automatically as you enter your grades and credit hours.
A cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher is considered good academic standing at NSU. Falling below 2.00 places an undergraduate student on academic probation.
You are placed on academic probation and given a maximum of three semesters to raise your CGPA back to 2.00 or higher. If you do not reach 2.00 within that window, NSU dismisses ("excludes") you from the university, per its published academic policy.
Yes. NSU allows you to retake any course in which you earned a B or lower, and an F must be retaken since it keeps counting against your CGPA until replaced. When you retake a course, only the better of the two grades is used in your CGPA calculation.
Yes. Both your original grade and your retake grade remain on your official transcript for record-keeping. However, only the better grade is counted when NSU calculates your CGPA.
You need an overall CGPA of at least 2.00, a minimum of 120 credits with at least 60 credits earned at NSU, and completion of all required courses. If you are graduating with a declared concentration, major, or minor, you also need a CGPA of at least 2.50 within that category.
Transfer credits from another university count toward your total credits needed for graduation, but they are excluded from your CGPA calculation. Only leave your NSU-graded courses in the calculator above for an accurate CGPA.
No. Under NSU's published grading policy, the highest available grade is A, awarded for a numerical score of 93 or above, worth 4.00 grade points. There is no separate A+ tier above it.
NSU maps a GPA of 3.00 and above to First Class, 2.50 to 2.99 to Second Class, and 2.00 to 2.49 to Third Class. This comparison is often requested on job and scholarship applications that ask for a "class" rather than a raw CGPA.
Yes. An F earned in any credit course counts toward your CGPA calculation until you retake that course or replace it with a passing grade in an equivalent course. Until then, it stays on your record as 0.00 grade points.
BRAC University and IUB publish North American-style 4.00 tables (A = 4.00, A− = 3.70, B+ = 3.30), so this calculator is built for them too. East West University publishes the UGC-style table (A+ = 4.00 at 80% and above), so EWU students should use the main CGPA Calculator. AIUB and UIU publish their own tables with different grade points, so check your university's grading policy before relying on any calculator.
Yes. NSU recognizes graduating undergraduates with Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, and Cum Laude based on final CGPA. The exact CGPA cut-off for each level is set by the Office of the Controller of Examinations, so confirm the current thresholds directly with that office.
