Universities Using This Scale
The following universities use the 10-Point Scale for calculating cumulative grade point averages.
What is the 10-Point CGPA Scale?
The 10-point CGPA scale is the grading system mandated by India's University Grants Commission (UGC) and adopted by premier institutions including the IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani, VTU, and Anna University. Grades range from O (Outstanding, 10.00) at the top to F (Fail, 0.00). The UGC recommends converting this CGPA to a percentage using the formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a CGPA of 8.5 would equal approximately 80.75%.
What is a Good CGPA on the 10-Point Scale?
On the 10-point scale, a CGPA of 9.0 or above is considered outstanding and qualifies you for the 'O' (Outstanding) grade band. A CGPA of 8.0–8.99 (A grade) is excellent and is competitive for top PSU recruitments, GATE admissions, and foreign university applications. A CGPA of 7.0–7.99 (B+ grade) is considered good and meets the minimum bar for most on-campus placements. Below 6.0, you may face restrictions for certain campus recruitment drives.

Frequently Asked Questions
The most widely used formula, recommended by UGC, is: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.2 gives 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. Some universities like VTU use slightly different multipliers, so always check your institution's official conversion method.
Yes, 8.5 CGPA is considered excellent on the 10-point scale. It corresponds to approximately 80.75% using the UGC formula, and qualifies you for the A+ grade band. It is competitive for GATE, top PSU jobs, and foreign university applications.
Yes, all IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) use the 10-point grading scale. The specific grade-point mappings may vary slightly between institutions, but the scale runs from 0 to 10 with O (Outstanding) being the highest grade.
A commonly used approximation is: GPA (4.0) = CGPA × (4.0 / 10.0). So an 8.5 CGPA ≈ 3.4 GPA. Many US universities also use the WES (World Education Services) evaluation which may apply different conversion standards.
Most top companies recruiting at IITs and NITs set a minimum CGPA cutoff of 7.0 on the 10-point scale. Some top-tier firms like Goldman Sachs, Google, and McKinsey may set higher bars around 8.0 or above.
