Universities Using This Scale
The following universities use the Nigerian 5.0 Scale for calculating cumulative grade point averages.
What is the Nigerian 5-Point CGPA Scale?
The Nigerian CGPA system uses a 5-point grading scale, as standardized by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Grades are assigned as follows: A (70–100%, 5 points), B (60–69%, 4 points), C (50–59%, 3 points), D (45–49%, 2 points), E (40–44%, 1 point), and F (below 40%, 0 points). A student's CGPA is calculated by dividing the total weighted grade points by total credit units. Degree classifications are based on CGPA: First Class (4.50–5.00), Second Class Upper (3.50–4.49), Second Class Lower (2.40–3.49), Third Class (1.50–2.39), and Pass (1.00–1.49).
What is a Good CGPA in Nigerian Universities?
A CGPA of 4.50–5.00 earns a First Class Honours degree, which is the highest distinction in Nigerian universities. A CGPA of 3.50–4.49 earns a Second Class Upper (2:1), which is highly valued by employers and graduate schools. Most top Nigerian employers and foreign graduate programs require at least a 2:1 (3.50 and above) for consideration.
